Turtok

Nubra, Leh Ladakh, Ladakh

- Description

It is the last village in Ladakh after which lies the line of control between India and Pakistan. Understandably remote, the location is not the only thing unique about Turtuk. Natural cold storage you may not find this natural wonder anywhere else but in Turtuk. The villagers keep their perishables inside small hollows which are naturally cold. Because of the underground glacial watercourse, these small hollows remain icy throughout the year, and these natural cold storages are really something that you would not see on daily basis. The people here speak Balti language, which is a mix of Persian and old Tibetan sounds which are no longer used in the Tibetan language. This indigenous group of people are the last that know of this language.
