- Description
It is a sprawling heavily guarded compound that had 4 towers but now has only 3 at the north, east and southeastern sides. Its was a property reserved only for the royal ladies of Vijayanagara Empire. Its main highlight is the Lotus Mahal which is the most intact structure of Hampi. Built in the hybrid Indo-Islamic architecture style and being the ladies quarters, it is said that eunuch soldiers guarded the area and entry was allowed only for the royal kings. The towers offer a vantage position to survey this area and the Elephant stables behind the Zanana Enclosure from where the royal women of the enclosure used to stand on top and enjoy the view of the royal processions and other ceremonies organized in the enclosure.
