Khavda
Bhuj, Kachchh, Gujarat
- Description
The Khavda hamlet is basically the final halt before entering the brutal saline heartlands of Gujarat. Khavda is famous for many things, including its leather craft, ceramics, rich Kutchi cuisine, and the colony of Flamingos who make this hamlet their home for a brief period of time during their journey. The majority of woodcarvers are from the Mewara mistry group, which creates beautiful motifs on wood. Affluent residences in Bhuj include cantilevered balconies created by the wood carving community. Woodcarvers create Patara (huge chests), Jhulas (swings), and etched statues of Gods and Goddesses. Colorful wooden bangles and toys may also be found in Khavda village. Terracotta has long been a preferred material for crafting basic yet elegant items. The Harappa pottery style is used here, with straight, basic lines in stark black and white against the red clay common in Gujarat.
